Living Ice

Living Ice was a toy that had some similar qualities to Slime and Gak; and so was semi-contraband in our household. (slime having been banned the previous month due to carpet incompatibility) It was different, though, in that it was more stiffly composed under room-temperature circumstances. It seemed as though it may not have been included in the slime prohibition act of '89. The specimen in question was obtained from our neighbor's "Mad Scientist Monster Lab" and transported into the no-slime-zone by unknown parties. We then proceeded to stick it to things, like ya do. This material seemed like the answers to our prayers, slime that was sticky but would not become stuck to things.

The exercise ended in a fastball throwing contest at the wall. The aim as I recall was to try and flatten the ball as much as possible upon impact and have it remain on the wall as long a possible. Needless to say, the fun ended when we were unable to extract all of the substance from the wall after a particularly good throw. There remained on our bedroom wall an oily resin and slight bumpiness in about a 3 inch diameter circle. Upon its discovery by authorities, any substance that could be considered slime-like was amended to the ban. This included floam, ooz, generic goo, even those beanless hacky sacs for fear that we would extricate the mystery from inside. The really funny part is that the oily circle bled through every coat of paint that was applied to cover it up. I imagine that the stain is still there today.

For more information on Living Ice read "Chemistry In The Toy Store". It is listed under the "Glue Ball" heading. This document contains descriptions of many other wonderful substances and is an invaluable reference.
